Rethymno has rightly the title of the “Town of Letters and Arts” and supports any expression of culture.
Carnaval
One of the most important events of Greece is the Carnaval in Rethymno, that takes place every year with great care and inspiration. There are 48 groups and 30 vehicles of 7.000 participants and every year the number is getting bigger. The songs, the parties of all the groups and the events like the “Hunt of the Golden Treasure”, the Tsiknopempti at Rethymno (Thursday of the Meat), the Night Parade e.t.c. are helping the visitors to feel part of the town.
Medieval Festival
The Medieval Festival is 25 years old and is taking place in the castle of Fortezza and in Venetian Churches, Minarets, streets and squares of the town of Rethymno. Its aim is to operate as the centre of the revival of Science and Art between the people of Mediterranean, the Balkan area and Europe.
The pathway of Psiloritis (Ida)
We invite you to walk on the nearest and easiest way on the highest peak of Crete at 2.456m (7.368ft) on Psiloritis (Ida) Mt. There is the holy church of the Cross and the superb view of the whole Crete and the islands around. At the same time you can enjoy watching people that they prepare and cook the lamp (traditional ancient way of cooking is to put the pieces of lamp one opposite the other on a spit and charcoal fire below) and meat in bowling water with rice. You’ll watch people preparing the famous cheese feta and mizithra.
On 8th of August you’ll follow the route to Livadia of Milopotamos.
There are many other cultural events like musical shows that they prove the title of the town of Rethymno as town of Arts and Science.
